Saturday, June 25 update: Geothermal, lava caves, and Hveragerði

We left Hafnarfjörður and headed toward the Golden Circle area. Our first stop was the Onpower Geothermal Energy Exhibition.

You will see the steam as you drive past on Route 1. The buildings are massive, but the Visitor’s Center is in the small “arrow” in the middle. [Read more…] about Saturday, June 25 update: Geothermal, lava caves, and Hveragerði

Friday, June 24 update: More Hafnarfjörður

We stopped by the Viking Village in Hafnarfjörður, though there wasn’t much going on around lunchtime.

Thursday, June 23 update: Hafnarfjörður

We’ve taken some time to relax the last few days in Hafnarfjörður, a town about 20 minutes outside of Reykjavik. We spent some time shopping in Kringlan, the largest mall in Reykjavik. It turns out that designation is a bit of a technicality, since Kringlan is 7 minutes away from the larger Smáralind, which is the largest mall in Iceland. Apparently, Smáralind is just outside of Reykjavik?

Monday, June 20 update

As we started to head out of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, we saw a sign for an attraction, and a fair number of cars parked. It didn’t look like much from the road:

Sunday, June 19 update

Hello!

Today was really fun. First we walked around town, and got swooped by a bunch of birds. After we got back to the house, we went on a hike to a town that was 45 minutes away walking.

Saturday, June 18 update: Into the Glacier

Today we headed into a glacier, with the aptly named Into the Glacier. This attraction just opened up a year ago, in June of 2015. As far as I can tell, a bunch of smart and motivated people decided to drill / mine a tunnel into a glacier, and then take tourists there. But because the ice is always shifting, and more snow is always falling, eventually the caves will collapse. So in … 10 years? … Into the Glacier will no longer exist.

Into the Glacier isn’t really close to anything. It’s a 2 hour drive from Reykjavik, and it seems to be a 2 hour drive from just about anywhere. You have the option to drive all the way to their office, called Klaki Base Camp, or take a shuttle for the last 20 minutes of the ride (for an extra 2000 krona per adult). Why take the shuttle? Here’s what the company says about the roads: [Read more…] about Saturday, June 18 update: Into the Glacier
