Live From Iceland!

Saturday, July 9 update: Reykjavik harbor area, City Library, Photography Museum, and Settlement 871 ±2

We headed to the main downtown area of Reykjavik, in and around the harbor. This is just a 10 minute or so walk from the museums we went to yesterday, though it feels like a very different area.

First up was supposed to be lunch at the Laundromat Café, but it seems perpetually full. Instead of fighting for a table, we moved on to Café Paris just down the street. .

Friday, July 8 update: Saga Museum and Whales of Iceland

As I noted yesterday, the Saga Museum has moved to a new home by the harbor. Similar to the Settlement Center in Borgarnes, admission includes an audio guide, which walks you through the numbered exhibits.

Thursday, July 7 update: Ikea, Perlan

Every good Icelandic vacation includes a trip to Ikea. Okay, not really. But if you find you need to buy something– fabric to cover your windows to block the 24 hour sun?– Ikea is the way to go.  It’s also the way to go if you want a really cheap meal for the kids.

Wednesday, July 6 update: The National Museum of Iceland

We spent a fair but of time at the National Museum of Iceland today. This is a little off of the beaten path. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, since it’s less than a 10 minute walk from Tjörnin pond. But you won’t really run into it from another tourist attraction in Reykjavik.

Tuesday, July 5 update: Laugavegur

Laugavegur is one of the main shopping streets in Reykjavik. The word Laugavegur means “wash road”, and you’ll see this root “Laugar” in many other names. The same word, Laugavegur, is also the name of a popular hiking trail. And Saturday in Icelandic is Laugardagur– wash day.

Monday, July 4 update: Reykjavik Park and Zoo

We spent today at the Family Park and Zoo. Now, this place won’t compete against some of the large and impressive zoos you may have visited in the United States or elsewhere. But the price doesn’t compete either:

Adults (anyone 13+): 840 krona, or about $6.80
Kids 5-12: 640 krona, or about $5
Kids under 5: 0 krona, or $0.

So a family of 4 with 2 kids who are, say, 8 and 10, can get into both the zoo and the park for under $25 total.

Let’s start with the zoo. The highlight is the seals, who have a large pool an enclosure right in the middle of the zoo area:
