Live From Iceland!

Tuesday, July 19 update: Suðurnes Science and Learning Center, Garður, Straumur

We headed to the Keflavik airport today, and stopped by a couple of the nearby towns, Suðurnes and Garður. Both places are the “wrong” way from the airport if you are heading to Reykjavik, and so I think most people skip them. And while I don’t think there are any “must-see” attractions here, they can be a good introduction to Iceland, and less than 15 minutes from the airport. And less than 10 minutes from each other.

We started with Sandgerði, at the Suðurnes Science and Learning Center. This is a working research facility, and includes researchers from the University of Iceland. On the lower level you’ll find a small art exhibition, and then the main museum is up the stairs.

Saturday, July 16 update: Flóran Café, Reykjaik Botanical Gardens, Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum, Laugardalslaug

Today started with brunch at Flóran Café, which is a restaurant smack in the middle of the Reykjavik Botanical Gardens. It’s inside of a greenhouse, and only open in the summer months. And, since cars aren’t allowed in the Botanical Gardens, you’re walking through the gardens to get to your food:

Friday, July 15th update: Víkin Reykjavik Maritime Museum, The Sea Baron, Icelandic Printmakers Gallery

Our main destination for the day was Víkin, The Reykjavik Maritime Museum. This is one of the Reykjavik City Museums.

Pictured above is the museum entrance closest to the downtown Reykjavik area; your GPS may steer you around the other side. But that other side has very limited parking, and it always seems full. Wednesday, July 13 update: Culture House, Messinn, and Harpa

If you’re walking in the city center of Reykjavik, you may have seen the Culture House. You can’t really tell what it is, but it’s a museum.

The current exhibition opened last year, and is called “Points of View.” I’m not really sure how to describe it. Ambitious? Challenging? The building itself is a fascinating labyrinth of rooms: [Read more…] about Wednesday, July 13 update: Culture House, Messinn, and Harpa

Monday, July 11 update: Art museum and children’s menus in Reykjavik

The Reykjavik Art Museum is either one museum or three museums, depending upon how you think of it. One the one hand, paying for admission to any one of them gets you in to all three of them, as long as you go on the same day.

On the other hand, you can’t really walk between any two buildings. Here is my poor attempt at a map: [Read more…] about Monday, July 11 update: Art museum and children’s menus in Reykjavik
