Saturday, July 23 update, Part 2: Reykjavik Sailors Whale Watching, Northern Lights Center

We’ve been whale watching already on this trip. Twice, actually. The first time was with North Sailing in Húsavík, and it was an incredible trip. We highly recommend getting to Húsavík if you can, and going with North. But, we realize that many people won’t be able to make it way up, um, north to North, and so we decided to try a whale watching trip from Reykjavik to compare.

Saturday, July 23 update, Part 1: Kolaportið flea market, fancy food in Reykjavik

Last weekend we dropped in briefly to see the Reykjavik Flea Market, Kolaportið. Today we headed back for a longer visit. Remember that it’s only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM – 5 PM. I feel like I always want to like this a lot more than I actually do.

Friday, July 22 update: Hiking Helgafell

We headed out to Hafnarfjörður to do some hiking today. Our destination was Helgafell mountain. “With an accessible and easy trail, walking on Helgafell is popular for all levels of hikers, including young children.”

The parking area is located here (Google Maps link); it’s about a half hour drive from the harbor area of downtown Reykjavik; it could be much less if you are already outside of town. You’re in the right place if you see this sign at the end of the parking area:

Thursday, July 21 update: Café Loki, Hallgrímskirkja, The Einar Jónsson Museum, and Skólavörðustígur

Before heading into the famous Hallgrímskirkja (Hallgrím’s Church) today, we stopped for lunch right across the street at Café Loki. Here’s your view of the church from the restaurant window:

Wednesday, July 20 update, Part 2: Omnom Chocolate

First, before we get any further, let’s just admit that Omnom Chocolate is a great name for a company. Go ahead and say it out loud. Omnom.

Omnom was founded in 2013, and had a small operation making chocolate bars. But just a few months ago, they moved to a much larger location by the harbor. That larger space allows them to offer tours.

This really a tasting tour; by the time you’ve sampled all of the types of chocolate they’ve prepared, the tour almost seems like an afterthought. Here’s where you’ll start:

Wednesday, July 20 update, Part 1: CityWalk Reykjavik

We started our day with a morning (10 AM) walking tour of Reykjavik. CityWalk is the top rated tour on Tripadvisor. Or at least it is right now:

CityWalk

There are other walking tours of the city. Some, like CityWalk, are “free”, and operate on tips– you pay whatever you want to pay at the end of the tour. Free Walking Tour also runs on tips, whereas I Heart Reykjavik runs a traditional paid walking tour. That tour has a maximum of 12 people, and frequently sells out; the small group would make for a very different experience. [Read more…] about Wednesday, July 20 update, Part 1: CityWalk Reykjavik
