We spent the previous night in a small area called Laugar in Saelingsdal, and it turns out our accommodations were right next to a natural hot pot:

We started the day in Siglufjörður, the northernmost town in Iceland. The main draw here is the Herring Era Museum. This is an impressive place– 3 huge buildings housing ships, tools, and information about herring fishing and processing in this area.

While some of the family spent the day in Akureyri, the rest of us headed to Húsavík, the self-proclaimed whale capital of Iceland. On the way (well, only slightly out of the way) we stopped at Laufás, a museum featuring a turf house from the 1840s:

We spent today in and around Akureyri, the largest town in Iceland that isn’t either named Reykjavik, or is close to Reykjavik. Our main stop was the Icelandic Aviation Museum, which proudly portrays the history of aviation in Iceland, and displays a lot of historical airplanes:

Reindeer were brought to east Iceland from Norway in the 1780s. Some were placed in other areas of Iceland, but only the herds in the east survived. Today, we went on a reindeer safari. Of course, when you’re in a superjeep, a river crossing is mandatory:

So airfare to Iceland can be surprisingly cheap. Lodging can be very reasonable, especially if you’re willing to use Airbnb. But everything else is really expensive. Hopefully, you won’t need to buy clothes while you’re here, or a camera. But you will need to buy food. As a very general rule of thumb, expect to …
