Iceland Update: December 2019. A one-stop safety map for Iceland?

Quick offer: If you’re heading to Iceland soon, check out our Driving in Iceland course. You’ll be a better and more confident driver as soon as you get to Iceland! And if you buy the course we’ll send you a free digital copy of our new book when it’s released in January!

The new Safe Travel conditions map

If you’re renting a car in Iceland, you need to check on the weather and road conditions. (This is a good idea even if you’re not driving!) My recommendation has always been to check what I call “The Big 3” safety sites:

1. road.is shows you the current road conditions:

Iceland Update: October 2019

There’s a lot going on in Iceland these days– there are fewer tourists around in October, but there’s still a lot to talk about! A new thermal bath that sounds amazing. A neat constant guessing game of whether a new airline will launch (or re-launch, I guess, in the case of WOW.) A new road, more expensive parking in Reykjavik, and more. Let’s take a look!

A new thermal bath in Húsafell

Lots of luxury thermal baths have opened in the last couple of years in Iceland. I assume that the success of the Blue Lagoon is to blame? Our favorite of the new crop is the brand new Vök Baths in East Iceland. [Read more…] about Iceland Update: October 2019

Iceland Update: September 2019

Summer is ending, and the temperatures are cooling. And there’s enough darkness to have a chance to see the Northern Lights! (Those are some lovely Northern Lights pictures from this week!) Here’s are some things happening in Iceland:

Our Brand New Driving in Iceland Course

We just released a new course to teach you all about driving in Iceland! And we’re only charging $5 US (€4.50) so we can have lots of safe drivers in Iceland.

There are 10 animated video lessons, plus a quiz and a printable information sheet. The course covers road signs, speed limits, F roads, roundabouts, winter driving, and much much more. The course should take you about an hour to complete, and you’ll be a more confident driver when you head to Iceland! [Read more…] about Iceland Update: September 2019

South Coast of Iceland Touring Plan

Outside of Reykjavik and the Golden Circle, the South Coast of Iceland is often the next area that people recommend for tourists. (And I’m one of those people– our sample 1 week Iceland itinerary with kids spends a lot of time in the south!)

Here is a sample itinerary for your visit to South Iceland. You can cover this in a day, or 2 or 3 days, depending on how much you want to see. In the list below you’ll see a couple of potential points where it can make sense to turn around. (And we don’t cover everything– there’s always more to see if you want to explore!) Here’s what we’re going to cover: (Click for a larger version.)

Monday, May 23 Update: Arcanum ATV Tour, Sólheimasandur, Dyrhólaey, Loftsalahellir, Reynisfjara

Today started with a fantastic ATV tour with Arcanum. We cruised across the black sand beaches of South Iceland. It hadn’t rained in several weeks, which is extremely unusual, and so we kicked up a lot of dust. But we still had the opportunity to do some hills, flats, water crossings and see some amazing things:
