Krauma Thermal Baths in West Iceland

Krauma Thermal Baths are in West Iceland, near the town of Reykholt. Note that there are 2 towns named Reykholt in Iceland: the other one is in the South of Iceland, in the Golden Circle area. Krauma opened at the end of 2016, the first in a trio of new premium thermal baths. GeoSea in North Iceland opened in 2018, and Vök Baths in East Iceland opened in 2019.

All of these feature hot outdoor pools heated by nearby geothermally heated water, and Krauma makes sure you know this the moment you step out of your car. It’s located right next to the Deildartunguhver geothermal area, and its clouds of hit sulphuric steam. Deildartunguhver is Europe’s most powerful hot spring. (That’s defined by total flow rate.)

GeoSea Thermal Baths in Húsavík, North Iceland

GeoSea opened in September 2018, making it one of the newer premium thermal baths in Iceland. There do seem to be a couple of new thermal baths opening each year, though; Vök Baths opened in July 2019, and Giljaböð  is supposed to open toward the end of 2019.

Those two are far from GeoSea, which is located in Húsavík in North Iceland. Húsavík is a 25 minute or so detour off of Ring Road, but GeoSea adds a new reason to head up this way. Many people head to Húsavík for whale watching; adding GeoSea and a Húsavík museum can make for a fun day up north. (If you’re heading up here for whale watching, we like North Sailing!)

GeoSea doesn’t look like much from the front. This seems to be a trend in thermal baths, to blend into the surrounding nature.

Iceland Update: October 2019

There’s a lot going on in Iceland these days– there are fewer tourists around in October, but there’s still a lot to talk about! A new thermal bath that sounds amazing. A neat constant guessing game of whether a new airline will launch (or re-launch, I guess, in the case of WOW.) A new road, more expensive parking in Reykjavik, and more. Let’s take a look!

A new thermal bath in Húsafell

Lots of luxury thermal baths have opened in the last couple of years in Iceland. I assume that the success of the Blue Lagoon is to blame? Our favorite of the new crop is the brand new Vök Baths in East Iceland. [Read more…] about Iceland Update: October 2019
