Planning an itinerary for your Iceland trip can seem daunting! If you want to save hours and hours of research, we can create a one-of-a-kind Iceland itinerary just for you!
To do it yourself, here are the steps we recommend:
First, check out our post about what parts of Iceland to see. Our general mantra here is “less is more.” Whether you have kids or not, leaving time to explore makes for a more memorable experience.
Next, take a look at our sample 1 week Iceland itinerary. That doesn’t cover all of Ring Road, but it hits major attractions on the South coast. (Quick plug if you’re interested: Our book has more itineraries, along with some maps.
Once you figure out the basic structure of your plan, you can drill down to each area. So for example, if you’re visiting the Golden Circle, read through our Golden Circle tour with kids. We have a detailed post about the South Coast of Iceland too.
Beyond that. scroll down for a list of other itinerary posts. E-mail me if you can’t find something. Or the consider our much better organized book. 🙂
Remember that all of these are just starting points. Also, remember that we don’t cover every attraction in Iceland! If you find something online that you want to add, go for it! Just remember to:
1. Make sure it’s not on an F road, unless you’re planning for that!
2. See how far off of the road it is. A destination that’s a half hour off the road can easily take 2 hours or more to visit. Dettifoss is a good example of this.
3. Try not to pack your days full. This may just be a personal preference of my family, but we had more fun doing less and leaving more time to explore and relax.
