After yesterday’s long (for us) car ride, we spent today in and around Höfn. We explored the town a little, and found um, those boots above. As well as the Gamlabúð Folk Museum, which is attached to the Visitor’s Center by the harbor. It’s a small 2 story museum, but it’s free!
Next door is the Maritime Museum, which is also free.
In the afternoon, we headed to the Höfn swimming pool, which features various pools of varying temperatures, and various waterslides of varying heights. We highly recommend the red slide, but you’ll probably get stuck on the blue one and have to push your way down.
Finally, those of us who still had some energy left headed to Pakkhús Restaurant. (Despite the Internet’s insistence, the restaurant is only open for dinner at 6 PM; lunch service should start up again soon.) Service was very efficient– some people may find it rushed, but with kids we were pleased. And the food was very good. There’s lots of langoustine on the menu (a type of lobster that Höfn is famous for), but we opted for some very good lamb:
Tomorrow is glacier day!

Eric, Have you found it to be true that lamb and lobster are two of the most common food fare in Iceland? and salmon? Do you think I’ll be left craving my dark greens like kale and raab? How have your children enjoyed eating in Iceland?
I’m oversimplifying, but many restaurants seem to fit into one of two categories. First are your snack bar / hot dog stands, where you will find hot dogs, hamburgers, ham and cheese sandwiches, fish and chips, etc. You’ll find something like this in most gas stations.
Second are nicer places, which will have lamb, arctic char, lobster (maybe more prevalent in the east), and the like. Entrees may come with a small salad and /or some root vegetables. Maybe this is based on the time of year, but we’ve seen very few dark greens so far!
Takk, Eric. Have your kids pretty much liked the food? By the way, where are you all from?
Thanks again for this site!
We’ve been cooking a fair bit, and so our meals have at least some resemblance to meals at home. But the kids have enjoyed Skyr, Icelandic lamb, and smoked char! If nothing else, I think most kids will find some skyr flavor they like …
