A Costco wholesale store will be opening up outside of Reykajvik on May 23rd; here’s the Icelandic page. I believe that a Costco membership card from anywhere else in the world should work in this store, though I’m not positive. (Can anyone confirm this?)
It’s location is in the municipality of Garðabær, about 15 minutes outside of the downtown Reykjavik area. Garðabær isn’t necessarily very high on most tourists’ lists, but that may change if you can save money by stocking up on food at Costco. There are two other notable places in Garðabær:
1. Ikea. Yes, the only Ikea in Iceland is going to be right next to Coscto. I’m not sure if they are literally right next to each other or a 1 minute drive. Ikea can be useful if you forgot towels or need something to cover up windows to block the 24-hour summer sun. Or if you just want a cheap meal. See a little more detail about Ikea in Iceland here.
2. The Museum of Design and Applied Art is about 5 or 6 minutes away from Ikea / Costco. My wife took one of our kids to it, and they both enjoyed it. It may not be worth a visit on its own, but you can add it on while you’re in the area. http://honnunarsafn.is/en
A quick update: Costco is now open.
Here’s a great blog post from someone who has visited the Reykjavik Costco.
A couple of notes:
– Several sites have confirmed that your Costco membership will work worldwide.
– Apparently, the Iceland Costco also sells gasoline, and it’s the cheapest in the country.
I called Costco Customer service yesterday.
They said to visit the membership desk first, and show your card to get a day pass.
Apparently not all the membership systems around the world are linked together.
The Team member will give you a day pass to use on site and for Gas.
Thanks for the information!
