Jökulsárlón lagoon

Today, we spent a lot of time driving and only some of that time doing things, which is unfortunately true of a lot of parts of Iceland! We’re still staying in Höfn, but we drove for over an hour to get to the Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon (a lake left behind by melting pieces of glacier ice).

All geared up for the boat!

We went out on a boat tour in the lagoon, which was really cool! I learned a lot about glaciers, and some of us ate 500-year-old popsicles, aka pieces of clear glacier ice floating in the water.

We had another tour scheduled after that at the Jökulsárlón lagoon, but the wind was too strong and had actually pushed all the floating glacier ice over to one side of the lake, so the boats couldn’t get in. It was cool-looking, though!

Finally, we stopped at the Þórbergssetur (Þórbergur Center), a museum about… who else… Þórbergur Þórðarson! He was an Icelandic author, poet, and lover of Esperanto. But the best part about the museum is that it looks like this:

yes-those-are-giant-books

It’s made of giant books! (Also, it has a restaurant inside.)

Tomorrow, we’re continuing our journey northeast!
